How can I cope with the hard times?

ANSWER

Be a hero!

There is a hero inside all of us, yes there is, you know there is.

Sometimes that hero may be hard to locate, maybe not feeling like showing up today, maybe feeling like having a day off from the rough and tumble, maybe just playing hard to get, but that hero is there, somewhere.

How do I know? Because I have been a hero. I look back at times in my life when the going got tough, and yes the tough did get going. And if you look back at your life I know you will find times when you have been a hero too.

Sometimes, especially those times when we are feeling a bit rough and ragged, let’s give ourselves a break and look back and remember when the hero inside us did stand up and be counted. And let’s take comfort and strength from that.

I wrote “HEROES” to remind myself that I can be a hero too.

POEM FOR TODAY

HEROES

If we are prone too long to cling and changes to eschew

Then we’re living life precarious despite all that we do

To construct our safe protections and maintain the status quo,

For whilst we are keeping life at bay, life doesn’t seem to know.

‘Twould be better to embrace it, all this uncontrollable,

And to welcome in the unknown thing, the unpredictable,

For it’s coming irrespective, that is just the way things are,

We are living in a flux of change, a constant brou-ha-ha.

And if we would live life timid, that is just a role we learn,

‘Neath the “nervous timerous beastie” there’s a hero’s badge to earn

Every time we step up bravely and then breach our comfort zone

And become the more the hero each time we our hero own.

So if we are living fearful, wondering what next lies in store,

Let’s remember change comes anyway, so let’s hold wide the door

And embrace what e’er may happen, for it’s that will set us free

To become again the heroes that we all were born to be.

If you are a bit sceptical about the latent hero concept then you might be interested in reading an interesting article that supports the idea that there is a latent hero lurking inside all of us. There is even a test that you can do to discover if you have what it takes to be a hero!!

According to researchers Zeno Franco and Philip Zimpardo,

“The decision to act heroically is a choice that many of us will be called upon to make at some point in time. By conceiving of heroism as a universal attribute of human nature, not as a rare feature of the few “heroic elect,” heroism becomes something that seems in the range of possibilities for every person, perhaps inspiring more of us to answer that call.”
